After more than 20 years of planning, proposals, legal wrangling and bureaucratic delays, construction work on the first of the five big marina projects in Cyprus may start in the next couple of months.

Following the news item on the marina planned for Larnaca, progress reports on the marinas planned for Ayia Napa, Limassol and Paphos have recently been published by Stockwatch.

One of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Cyprus, the marina project involves the construction of a port, 1,000-berth marina, hotels and houses and is expected to inject up to one billion Euros into the Cypriot construction industry.

According to the Mayor of Limassol, Andreas Christou "The construction of the Limassol Marina is of national importance to Cyprus as it will benefit the city's trade and economy".

Plans for the new Limassol marina have run aground according to the town's mayor Andreas Christou. It seems that the project, which is expected to cost around €170 million, is having difficulty raising the necessary funding.

Although more than 20 years have passed since initial studies into the five big marina projects in Cyprus were undertaken, work on their construction has yet to begin.

Despite recent reports of funding problems, the Cypriot company set up to deliver the Limassol marina remains confident that everything will run smoothly.
